When you're putting the project together, the producer produces the money, the crew, the equipment, etc. Anyone who has an essential part in making the project happen can be, and will probably want to be, called a producer. Producers often package the film, raise money, over- see the budget, bring actors to the project, negotiate, and know the right people. They are variously known as executive, supervising, associate, co-, and line producers.   There are all sorts of names for producers: Executive Producer, Line Producer, etc. In my opinion, when you're doing a small independent production, it's senseless to bother with all the fancy titles.
